Includes correspondence, 1816-1836, of Samuel Smith (while serving in the United States Congress and as mayor of Baltimore) concerning, in part, the bank riot in Baltimore in 1835 and land in Mason and Kanawha counties. Include correspondence with his son John Spear Smith concerning the Democratic Party, the Bank of the United States, 1816-1836, the 1830 United States census, tariff legislation and other activites of the 22nd Congress. Also, include correspondence, 1835-1865, of John Spear Smith (while commander of the 3rd division, Maryland state militia) chiefly concerning the riot of 1835, and including invoices, 1835-1836, of arms sent to the Baltimore armory. Also, include invitations, resolutions and certificates of membership, 1855-1866, issued to John Spear Smith.

In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit. Samuel Smith was a veteran of both the Revolution and the War of 1812 who made his living in shipping. A Republican, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1793-1803 and 1816-1822, and to the United States Senate, serving from 1803-1815 and 1822-1833.
